A busy week of events ahead

Cape Town is gearing up for another busy week of events, with esports, Currie Cup rugby, family entertainment, fashion and road running taking centre stage in the city.

The City’s Events Permit Office has approved and is monitoring 12 events this week, with the busiest period expected over the weekend.

Collectively, these events are expected to attract around 20 000 participants and spectators.

Disney on Ice continues its school holiday run at Grand West with Mickey’s Search Party, bringing favourite Disney stories to life through dazzling skating, breathtaking stunts and unforgettable music.

The production features beloved characters including Mickey, Minnie, Elsa, Moana, Miguel from Coco, Buzz Lightyear and many more in a live adventure packed with wonder, laughter and Disney magic.

Shows take place at 11:00 and 15:00 on Thursday and Friday, and at 11:00, 14:00 and 18:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Each performance runs for approximately two hours, including a 15-minute interval. Doors open one hour before each show and patrons are encouraged to arrive early.

African Gaming Championship

GrandWest will also host the second edition of the African Gaming Championship from 16 to 19 July.

The esports showcase will see Africa’s top players battle across some of the world’s biggest gaming titles for a share of the R150 000 prize pool.

The event also features the Nitro ASL Finals, where South Africa’s leading school teams will compete for championship honours and qualification pathways to the Carry1st Africa Cup and the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship.

More than just a tournament, the African Gaming Championship celebrates gaming culture with free spectator entry. Registration is available through the African Gaming Championship website.

Competition takes place daily from 09:00 to 17:00.

Currie Cup

Currie Cup rugby returns to the Mother City on Friday, 17 July, when DHL Stormers XXIII host defending champions Griquas at DHL Stadium.

Kick-off is at 19:05, with stadium gates opening at 17:30.

Tickets are available online and from the ticket office on Fritz Sonnenberg Road on match day.

Residents and motorists are advised that roads around the stadium, including Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard may be impacted on matchday.

Khayelitsha Fashion Week

Khayelitsha Fashion Week, returning for its 11th anniversary edition, will once again serve as a platform celebrating local creativity, sustainable fashion and emerging talent.

Taking place at the Artscape Theatre Centre on Saturday, 18 July, the event will showcase their collections, while 45 aspiring models take to the runway as part of the Mother City Fashion Experience.

Ahead of the event, designers participated in skills-development workshops, while the models completed runway and professional development training.

This year’s competition places a strong focus on upcycling, challenging designers to transform recycled and waste materials into striking fashion pieces.

The show starts at 13:00 and runs until 18:00.

Festival of Running

The Cape Town Festival of Running rounds off the weekend with two days of racing celebrating fitness, teamwork, and healthy living.

The 26th edition begins on Saturday with a 50 km ultra-marathon through Green Point, Mouille Point and Sea Point, alongside a 5 x 5 km team relay on the Sea Point Promenade.

Sunday’s programme features the half marathon, with more than 1 000 runners expected to tackle one of Cape Town’s most scenic routes through Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Camps Bay.

Events begin at 07:00 on both days.

Residents and motorists are advised that temporary traffic disruptions can be expected along sections of the route in Green Point, Sea Point and Camps Bay.

Queens Road near Bantry Bay
Kloof Road
Victoria Road in Camp’s Bay
